Start-up grants

The Enterprise Melbourne start-up grants are designed to assist with the establishment of new and innovative small businesses that will increase the diversity of the city’s business community. Only one grant will be made to an eligible business.

Up to $30,000 is available for small businesses located in, or intending to locate to, the City of Melbourne municipality.

What can you claim?

The start-up grant supports the following categories of expenditure directly related to establishing a new business:

  • The costs associated with improving the façade and fit-out of business premises.
  • The costs associated with the development or enhancement of a business website.
  • The costs associated with purchasing IT equipment for the operation of the new business / or as part of the business expansion activity.
  • The costs associated with purchasing specialised equipment / software that is directly related to the operation of the new business / or as part of the business expansion activity
  • Expenditure items that are not listed above, but that can be demonstrated as significantly crucial for the start-up / expansion of a specialised business.

General operational expenses including rent, utilities, training, marketing, networking and staff remuneration are not considered.

 

Assessment criteria

Each application will be assessed against the small business grants objectives and assessment criteria.

An assessment report is prepared for consideration by an external independent review panel. The panel will consider the conforming applications on a competitive and merit basis and make recommendations to a specific council committee for approval.

Applications that offer the most valuable contribution to the achievement of the program objectives and those that are consistent with Council’ strategies will be offered grants. Preference will be given to businesses that:

  • demonstrate a strong point of difference
  • do not duplicate existing products and services available in the central city
  • demonstrate ‘business readiness’ (that the product and/or service is well-researched, planned and financially viable)
  • demonstrate financial viability and sound management
  • deliver measureable economic benefits to the City of Melbourne
  • demonstrate sustainable business practices
  • preferably in one of the City of Melbourne’s key target industry sectors.

The City of Melbourne’s key target industry sectors are:

  • advanced manufacturing
  • biotechnology
  • finance and business services
  • environment services
  • creative industries
  • higher education
  • information and communication technologies
  • hospitality
  • retail.

On average, applicants will be notified of the assessment outcome three months from the closing date of the application. All decisions are final. There will be no review or appeal process however, unsuccessful applicants are eligible to re-apply.

Applicant Business description Grant category
City Handyman City Handyman will establish a mobile handyman and property maintenance service. The business model will embrace sustainable and environmental practices through using a fleet of scooters, bicycles and public transport to service the City.

 

Funding is provided to assist with the fit-out of a CBD office, developing a website and the purchase of specialist tools.

Small Business Start up
Current Circus Pty Ltd Current Circus specialises in developing creative games and software applications. The expanded activity is the introduction of new interactive digital projections and installations and the relocation of the company studio into the City of Melbourne.

 

Funding will be applied to purchase IT and specialist equipment and re-development of the website.

Small Business Expansion
Electron Workshop Electron Workshop will establish an environmentally aware co-working space for digital companies, studio facilities for pod casting and a dedicated bicycle storage area to be located in the North Melbourne Precinct.

 

Funds will be used on capital expenditure for fit-out, website development and the purchase of IT equipment.

Small Business Start Up
Gumbo Kitchen Gumbo Kitchen is a mobile gourmet food van specialising in fast food based on recipes from the New Orleans region in the United States. The business will be present at various locations during Melbourne events and festivals and will operate its head office in William Street, Melbourne.

 

Funding will be directed towards enabling the van to minimise its ecological impact through a range of environmental sustainability measures and initiatives. This includes installation of photovoltaic cells on the roof of the vehicle and energy efficient gas kitchen appliances, as well as funds for website development.

 

Small Business Start Up
House of CQ House of CQ will establish a new fashion studio introducing luxury, handcrafted corsetry, made-to-measure bridal and couture, and tailor-made lingerie. The business will deliver high-end bespoke clothing under four brands: Corset Queen, CQ couture, CQ Bridal and Retro Slave. House of CQ nurtures the creative industries sector and envisages to set up traineeships and mentoring programs for young designers.

 

Funds are provided for fit-out of the studio, IT and equipment requirements.

Small Business Start Up
Melbourne City Rooftop Melbourne City Rooftop will deliver the provision of honey, via sustainable urban bee keeping to the local hospitality sector and establish a retail outlet in Melbourne. The business aims to bring bees back to the city through deploying hives on the roof spaces of cafés, restaurants, hotels and in individual’s gardens in and around Melbourne.

 

Funding will be used to purchase materials and equipment to deploy 50 hives on rooftops in the first year.

Small Business Start Up
YBF Pty Ltd YBF will develop a co-working space where entrepreneurs can work in a collaborative and creative environment and be resourced by a seed accelerator program.  Start up businesses are provided with seed capital to grow from the seed stage to the next stage of the business cycle.  Mentoring, administrative services and professional advice as well as space will be provided.

 

The funding being provided is for   fitting out the York Butter Factory (YBF).
