ARENA Launchpad Grant: How to Strengthen Your $500k Startup Application

ARENA funding opportunity

ARENA Launchpad Program: Up to $1M for Clean Energy Startups

ARENA has launched a $30 million program to support early-stage clean energy startups and the organisations that help them grow.

For startups, the main opportunity is $500,000 in grant funding, with up to a further $500,000 available for projects with high capital expenditure requirements.

In short:

If you’re an early-stage company developing renewable energy or clean energy technology, ARENA Launchpad is worth assessing. The Startup Funding Round provides $500,000, with additional funding potentially available for projects with substantial capital expenditure. Applications close at 4:00 pm AEDT on 28 October 2026.

The two rounds are quite different. Most companies looking for funding for their own technology will be interested in the Startup Funding Round.

What is the ARENA Launchpad Program?

Launchpad is an Australian Renewable Energy Agency funding program aimed at helping promising clean energy technologies through the early stages of development and commercialisation.

ARENA describes the Startup Funding Round as supporting early-stage businesses to improve the technical and commercial readiness of renewable energy technologies and products, overcome early funding gaps and become better positioned for future investment.

ARENA has indicated that the Startup round is primarily aimed at innovative pre-seed to seed-stage businesses.

Early-stage funding

Launchpad is intended to help businesses move through an early-stage funding gap rather than only supporting large commercial deployments.

Technical + commercial progress

The project should move the technology toward a meaningful technical or commercial milestone rather than simply fund business-as-usual growth.

Startup Funding Round

The Startup Funding Round has up to $15 million available.

Successful applicants receive a $500,000 grant. Projects with significant capital expenditure requirements may also seek up to a further $500,000, taking the potential ARENA contribution to $1 million.

ARENA expects the round to support approximately 15 to 30 companies.

Eligibility isn’t the same as competitiveness.

A project can fit the basic program requirements and still be a weak application. It is worth pressure-testing the project before investing heavily in the submission.

What sort of startups is ARENA looking for?

The strongest starting point is whether the technology genuinely fits ARENA’s mandate and strategic priorities.

ARENA’s current areas of interest include:

  • ultra low-cost solar;
  • the transition to renewable electricity;
  • renewable hydrogen;
  • low-emissions metals; and
  • decarbonising transport.

Technologies around energy storage, electrification, renewable generation, grid integration and other enabling technologies may also be relevant where there is a clear connection to ARENA’s mandate.

But don’t start with the grant. Start with the project.

Is my startup too early?

Possibly not. Launchpad was specifically introduced to address an early-stage funding gap.

ARENA has described the Startup Funding Round as primarily targeting pre-seed to seed-stage startups and helping them reach their next technical or commercial milestone.

That could make the program relevant where you have moved beyond a basic idea but still need funding for development, validation, testing, demonstration or other activities needed before broader commercial deployment.

The question isn’t simply whether your business is young. It is whether there is a sufficiently developed technology, a credible project and a clear reason ARENA funding would materially move it forward.

What makes a strong Launchpad project?

This is where I would spend most of the time before writing the application.

A $500,000 grant application should start with a project that makes sense without the grant language wrapped around it.

What is genuinely different?

Don’t rely only on the size of the market or the environmental benefit. Be clear about what you are actually developing that is technically or commercially different.

What milestone will the project achieve?

There should be a meaningful change between where the technology is now and where it will be at the end of the funded project.

Why does it matter to the energy transition?

The connection to ARENA’s objectives should be clear rather than something created afterwards to fit the application.

What happens next?

Show what the funding unlocks: further demonstration, customer deployment, manufacturing scale-up, private investment or another defined commercial milestone.

Don’t write the application before testing the fundamentals

One of the biggest mistakes with competitive grants is spending weeks improving the wording of a project that was never particularly competitive.

Before committing to a Launchpad application, pressure-test:

  • strategic fit with ARENA;
  • technical novelty and development required;
  • stage of the technology;
  • project scope;
  • commercial pathway;
  • team capability;
  • project budget;
  • use of the ARENA funding;
  • evidence supporting the problem and market; and
  • what will actually be achieved by the end of the funded project.

If those fundamentals are weak, nicer writing won’t solve the problem.

Ecosystem Funding Round

The second half of Launchpad is aimed at organisations that support renewable energy and climate technology startups rather than startups developing their own technology.

ARENA has allocated up to $15 million to the Ecosystem Funding Round, with individual grants of up to $5 million available for multi-year programs.

Potential applicants include organisations such as:

  • accelerators;
  • incubators; and
  • other organisations providing structured support to relevant startups.

ARENA is particularly interested in programs that improve startup commercialisation, business development, technical development, engineering and project delivery, regulatory capability, customer development and investment readiness.

Unlike the Startup Funding Round, there is currently no fixed closing date. The Ecosystem round remains open until its available funding is exhausted.

If you’re considering the Startup round, there isn’t a huge amount of time. I’d work out whether the project is genuinely competitive before investing heavily in the application.

How do you apply?

Applications are submitted through ARENANet, ARENA’s grants management system.

Applicants should review the relevant:

  • Launchpad Program Guidelines;
  • Funding Round Announcement;
  • application requirements;
  • budget documentation;
  • conflict of interest requirements; and
  • proposed Funding Agreement.
Use the official documents.

The Funding Round Announcement and Program Guidelines are the documents that matter. A website summary, including this one, shouldn’t replace them.

How Bulletpoint can help with an ARENA Launchpad application

The first thing we do isn’t start writing.

We work out whether the project is worth applying for.

That normally means pulling apart the technology, the proposed project and the commercial pathway and comparing them with the grant objectives and assessment criteria.

If the fit stacks up, we can then help structure the application around the actual project rather than handing your technical team a blank grant template and asking them to write it.

For Launchpad, that may include:

  • reviewing eligibility and program fit;
  • pressure-testing the proposed project;
  • identifying gaps before the application is drafted;
  • interviewing the technical and commercial team;
  • structuring the project narrative;
  • developing responses against the relevant criteria;
  • working through milestones and project outcomes;
  • reviewing the project budget; and
  • preparing and reviewing the submission.

If we don’t think it stacks up, we’d rather tell you early.

We can first work out whether the project has a credible fit with the program before you commit significant time to preparing an application.

ARENA Launchpad FAQs

How much can I get through the ARENA Launchpad Program?

The Startup Funding Round provides successful applicants with $500,000, with up to a further $500,000 available for projects with high capital expenditure requirements. The Ecosystem Funding Round provides grants of up to $5 million.

When does the ARENA Launchpad Startup Funding Round close?

Applications close at 4:00 pm AEDT on 28 October 2026.

Who is the Startup Funding Round for?

ARENA says the round is primarily aimed at early-stage, pre-seed to seed-stage companies developing technologies aligned with ARENA’s mandate and priorities.

Does my technology need to be renewable energy related?

There needs to be a genuine connection to ARENA’s mandate and strategic priorities. A general sustainability benefit alone should not be assumed to be enough.

Is Launchpad only for startups?

No. Launchpad has a separate Ecosystem Funding Round for organisations such as accelerators and other organisations helping relevant startups develop and commercialise.

How many startups will receive funding?

ARENA has indicated that it expects the Startup Funding Round to support approximately 15 to 30 companies.

Where do I submit an application?

Applications are submitted through ARENA’s ARENANet portal.

Can Bulletpoint tell me whether I should apply?

Yes. Our preference is to assess the project first rather than start writing immediately. If the project doesn’t appear to have a credible fit with the program, it is better to know before spending substantial time preparing an application.
