Apprentice Kickstart Initiative

$57.5 M program to encourage employers to take on new apprentices to help address Western Australia’s trade shortage in the construction industry.

Overview

The Apprentice Kickstart Initiative is an employer incentive designed to increase the number of Australian Apprenticeship commencements in skills shortage areas of the building and construction industries.

 

Eligible Applicants

Small and medium enterprises and eligible Group Training Organisations may attract the Apprentice Kickstart Initiative where their Australian Apprentice:

  • commences between 1 December 2012 and 28 February 2013 (inclusive); and
  • is undertaking a Certificate III or IV level qualification that leads to a building or construction occupation listed on the National Skills Needs List.

The employer must also meet eligibility requirements under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program.

A small or medium enterprise is one that employs fewer than 200 people.

An eligible Group Training Organisations is one that is listed on the Group Training National Register. Group Training Organisations that are not listed on the Group Training National Register will not be eligible for the Apprentice Kickstart Initiative unless they meet the definition of a small or medium enterprise.

Qualifications that lead to the following occupations may be eligible to attract the Apprentice Kickstart Initiative:

  • Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Airconditioning and Mechanical Services Plumber
  • Bricklayer
  • Cabinetmaker
  • Carpenter
  • Carpenter and Joiner
  • Drainer
  • Electrician (General)
  • Fibrous Plasterer
  • Floor Finisher
  • Gasfitter
  • Glazier
  • Joiner
  • Landscape Gardener
  • Painting Trades Worker
  • Plumber (General)
  • Roof Plumber
  • Roof Tiler
  • Sheetmetal Trades Worker
  • Signwriter
  • Solid Plasterer
  • Stonemason
  • Wall and Floor Tiler
  • Welder (First class)
  •  

Payments

The new payments are in addition to the suite of employer incentives already available under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program. Payments are made directly to the employer’s nominated bank account.

 

Timing

The Apprentice Kickstart Initiative is available for commencements between 1 December 2012 and 28 February 2013, or until 21 000 Apprentice Kickstart Initiative commencements have occurred over this period.

Your Australian Apprenticeships Centre will advise you of your eligibility for the Apprentice Kickstart Initiative at sign up.
