About the project

The Australia’s National Landscapes project has been developed through the Strategic Tourism Investment Grants program. The National Landscapes (NL) program is a partnership between Parks Australia and Tourism Australia that aims to achieve conservation, social and economic outcomes for Australia and its regions via the promotion of nature based tourism experiences to the global Experience Seeker tourism market. There are currently 16 National Landscapes around Australia. Each Landscape must form a strategic framework for planning, regional tourism development, and marketing. Part of this process is the development of an Experience Development Strategy (EDS).

The EDS is a tool for focused destination management planning and includes a new or improved implementation plan for products; sustainability initiatives; business opportunities; partnerships; facilities; services; information; access; communication; marketing; visitor management and infrastructure.

Grant applications are invited for the delivery of:

  • Experience Development Strategies
Approximately $300,000 for the development of new EDSs for the ten NLs where EDSs are not in place (average cost of an EDS is $60,000, and each NL in this category would be eligible for $30,000).  Eligible landscapes for this element are: Australia’s Red Centre, Australia’s Timeless North, both in NT, NSW/Qld, Kangaroo Island, Wet Tropics, Greater Blue Mountains, Ningaloo-Shark Bay, Tasmania and Sydney Harbour.
  • Product/industry Development Initiatives:
Approximately $700,000 for product development projects (one in each NL) which are identified as being investment ready through an existing finalised EDS process (or equivalent) in the remaining six NLs—Australian Alps, Australia’s Coastal Wilderness, Flinders Ranges, the Kimberley, Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s Green Cauldron, Great South West Edge, and Great Ocean Road.  Projects should be selected in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the respective NL Steering Committees.

The organisation chosen to deliver the project will be responsible for ensuring that the project continues after the Strategic Tourism Investment Grant’s funding period—either under their own management or by establishing other suitable ongoing governance arrangements. Proposals which provide sustainable and commercially viable outcomes for the Australian tourism industry beyond the life of the funding agreement will be preferred.

Timeline

Grant applications to deliver the Australia’s National Landscapes project close at 5.00pm on 30 May 2012.

Up to $1,000,000 (excl GST) will be available to the successful applicant (the Grantee) to deliver the two streams of this project. Applicants will be required to demonstrate matching cash is available.
