23 inventions shared in $10 million in the latest round of Commercialisation Australia funding.
The inventions that were awarded funding include five health-related projects that could manage chronic stress, create drugs with fewer side effects, produce healthier foods, combat hearing loss and enhance micro-scale blood storage.
Sydney-based Ai-Media has been granted more than $1.7 million for technology that allows live speech to be streamed as text to iPads, tablets or laptops. This will help provide people who are deaf or hearing impaired access to employment and education opportunities.
Funding was also granted to an invention that could produce biological drugs to fight pain, cancer and inflammatory diseases in cats, dogs and horses.
The latest Commercialisation Australia grants also supported a Northern Territory invention that will increase the payload of road trains.
Seven information and communications technology (ICT) projects won support, including a mobile phone application that operates like a hotel key to open rooms.
Since its launch less than two years ago, Commercialisation Australia has assisted 177 innovators with funding of $71.7 million.

|A preclinical to clinical process for medical imaging||Clarity Pharmaceuticals utilises their unique radiopharmaceutical products with the latest PET imaging technology to track the path of biopharmaceuticals inside the body. The value of this is that more targeted drugs can potentially be developed that reach the diseased cells specifically, without affecting surrounding healthy cells. With funding from Commercialisation Australia, Clarity Pharmaceuticals will obtain expert regulatory advice and undertake an imaging validation study to expand its PET imaging service, which is currently limited to animal studies, to include human clinical trials.|

The solution harnesses cloud-based technology, helping clients save costs whilst providing fast, secure and reliable access from anywhere, anytime. Funding from Commercialisation Australia will help review business planning and assessment of relationships with strategic partners and potential investors and deliver a project to enable a national and international rollout of the solutions.|
|Green building web-enabled automation & energy management||Switch Sustainability Platform is a cloud based platform for automation and energy management in apartments, commercial buildings and homes. The Platform provides a simple, cost effective and web-enabled solution for the growing Green Building market – ensuring that building owners, managers, tenants and residents can monitor, measure and control their energy consumption. Commercialisation Australia is assisting Switch Automation in their efforts to bring the platform to market.|
|Ai-Live captioning technology scale up||Access Innovation Holdings, or Ai-Media, has developed technology called Ai-Live that allows live speech to be streamed as text in seconds to any web-enabled device such as iPads, tablets or laptops. This helps provide access to employment and education opportunities for people who are deaf or hearing impaired. Commercialisation Australia funding will be used to deliver fully scalable systems to achieve sales in multi-user sites.|
|Metal Science Technologies|
|Portable electro polishing apparatus for stainless steel||With funding from Commercialisation Australia, Metal Science Technologies intends to develop a portable apparatus for improvements in the speed and corrosion resistance process of post weld finishing which will result in high quality, safe surface finishing of stainless steel on site.|
|Better tasting and healthier functional foods||Progel has developed a method to process functional food actives such as probiotics, omega-3s, vitamins and minerals so they have improved health benefits without affecting the taste of the foods they are added to. This will enable the creation of new functional food products like multi-strain probiotic milk and juice. These products have not been possible to date as the probiotics make the milk and juice taste sour. Commercialisation Australia funding will be used to develop the new prototype functional food products by Progel in partnership with food and ingredient manufactures who will be evaluating the technology for commercial viability.|
|Computerised sport cycling machine||With funding from Commercialisation Australia, Biobike intends to determine the commercial viability of a mass market spin bike utilising the applicant’s technology which is currently used in the sophisticated sports science market. Refinement of global product build and manufacturing processes is expected to achieve a product price point and quality to meet the global market requirements.|
|Eclipse intelligent, energy efficient lighting for industry||With assistance from Commercialisation Australia, Strategic Lighting will develop energy efficient industrial lighting, combining T5 lamps, smart electronic technology and adjustable parabolic optics. A fully sealed composite and alloy body will deliver a world class lighting solution.|
|Diesel particulate reduction technology||Peak3 has developed a unique and highly effective system for removing harmful particulates from the exhaust of diesel engines. Having successfully completed the first phase of development for its technology, Peak3 will use Commercialisation Australia funding to complete its emissions reduction technology to meet specific vehicle and mine requirements. Using a specific set of in-service mining vehicles, the system will be developed to final industrial grade commercial deployment level for in-mine use including protective housing and operating/management software.|
|Water utility decision support software tool||Optimatics has developed a real time decision support software tool for optimising the operations of water utilities’ water systems. The tool will ultimately provide for efficient and effective use of water utility resources, especially energy, while at the same time providing water supply quality and security. Funding from Commercialisation Australia will be used to enhance and extend the tool’s functionality to demonstrate it meets the system requirements of industry partners and is readily adaptable for the commercial use of other utilities.|
|Rotary Shaft Wave Disc Drying Technology||Keith Engineering is a specialised service business providing engineering design, manufacturing and installation of Rendering plants, with a strong commitment to being at the forefront of Drying Technologies through Research and Development. With help from Commercialisation Australia, Innovative “Wave Disc” Technology could revolutionize the manufacturing of Rotary Disc Dryers on a global scale.|
|A method of identifying and managing chronic stress||Excessive and prolonged levels of stress can be energy-draining and can lead to a wide range of health problems. Invatec Health has developed an innovative stress monitoring and management system known as the Stress Fit System. The Stress Fit System identifies harmful levels of prolonged stress using biological data, such as an individual’s heart rate during sleep periods. With Commercialisation Australia funding Invatec Health aims to real-time test the Stress Fit System and further develop product support as well as enhance the product’s marketing strategy and consolidate relationships with key strategic partners.|
|Nasal spray for the treatment of fluid in the middle ear||Otifex Therapeutics is developing a new nasal spray product for the treatment of fluid in the middle ear, the most common cause of acquired hearing loss in childhood, with the aim to reduce the need for grommet operations. Funding from Commercialisation Australia will help support an experienced executive to manage the necessary clinical trials and further develop the commercialisation strategy.|
|AIR TIP – side tipper transport solution for bulk commodities||Air Tip has developed a new and innovative air operated side tip trailer that delivers a pay load increase of 6% to the road transport industry. Funding from Commercialisation Australia will support the Air Tip project to ensure its IP security and aid in the development and implementation of sound commercialisation strategies.|

|The Wayo Board – internet based portable electronic display||Total Range Design has developed the Wayo Board, a technology which helps small, medium and large businesses located on street fronts efficiently and effectively advertise their offerings to passersby. Consisting of an electronic portable A-frame sidewalk display board and a web-based display editor, the Wayo Board system provides a dynamic advertising display. Commercialisation Australia funding will be used to develop the marketing and financial plan needed to take the Wayo Board to market, as well as to strengthen the IP position of the company.|
|LEAPIN – Remote Access Control and Security Solutions||LEAPIN has developed an iPhone/Android application which allows hotel guests to bypass the reception check-in desk and use their mobile phone to open their room doors. The application removes check-in hassles for guests and hotels, through a secure transaction system. Commercialisation Australia funding will help LEAPIN identify commercialisation and equity partners, and determine the best route to market.|
|Millispot||Millispot is a functional porous polymer medium for the storage of dried blood spots (DBS) that is an alternative to conventional paper based media. The benefits of Millispot over paper are improved accuracy of analyses and simpler, more reliable customer workflows. These are projected to enable the pharmaceutical industry to realise the full range of potential benefits of DBS technology over traditional wet blood techniques, which include less invasive sampling and easier transportation. With Commercialisation Australia funding, the aim is to refine the manufacturing elements of the business plan to bring the technology to market.|
|“Stick-it” Spray Drift Retardant||Vitel Australia has developed an innovative, easy to use spray drift retardant product in an effervescent tablet that farmers simply add to their spray tank. Funding from Commercialisation Australia will be used to verify and protect the IP, complete registration with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority and obtain supporting test data.|
|Investment round documentation for Nextvet BioPharma|
|Nexvet is using its expertise to develop biological drugs for companion animals that are specific equivalents of blockbuster human biopharmaceuticals. The therapeutic focus is on pain, cancer and inflammatory diseases for dogs, cats and horses. Commercialisation Australia funding will be used to secure specialist advice and reports to support a significant capital raising to finance the expansion of the product portfolio.|
|Advanced technology for treatment of waste water||Aquamill has developed new water purification technology based on mechanical vapour compression and superheated steam as the drying medium. This technology is focused at processing high total dissolved solids waste streams in mining and process industries. Commercialisation Australia grant funds will be used to help Aquamill identify suitable trial partners and develop a commercialisation plan.|

|Data Quality and Integrity Toolkit||The Data Quality & Integrity Toolkit, developed by Curtin University, is a software tool that cleans up duplications and errors in corporate and government databases. It can also detect the source of contamination and prevent future data pollution. Areas where data quality is of major concern include crime, national security and the health industry. The software takes into account the rules and policies of an individual organisation. Commercialisation Australia funding will be used to develop a comprehensive business plan to attract the additional investment necessary for full commercialisation.|
