What is the Open Streets Program?
The Open Streets Program 2025-28 provides up to $350,000 for local councils in NSW to temporarily close streets to vehicles and activate them with recurring community events and activations.
Track Record
At Bulletpoint, we have a strong track record of securing competitive grants for our clients. We’ve helped businesses and councils access millions in funding for community and infrastructure projects. Our expertise in crafting compelling applications has resulted in successful outcomes across various government grant programs.
For example, we assisted a local council in securing over $1 million in grant funding for urban renewal projects, ensuring their submission aligned with key government priorities. We understand what it takes to win funding and how to position projects for success.
Are you eligible for the Open Streets Program?
To be eligible for the Open Streets Program 2025-28, applicants must:
- Be a local council within NSW
- Submit only one application per council (but may propose multiple events within a single application)
- Propose projects that involve the temporary closure of streets primarily used for vehicles
- Plan events within 500m of a local centre, near public transport, or on a street with a public facility such as a library or community centre
- Commit to delivering recurring events over three years, at least once per year
While meeting these criteria is essential, securing funding is competitive. Councils must present a strong case demonstrating how their project will enhance street vibrancy and drive long-term community engagement.
What Kinds of Projects Can the Open Streets Program Fund?
The program funds projects that transform streets into vibrant public spaces by temporarily closing them to vehicles. Eligible projects must:
- Deliver free, inclusive, and recurring street-based events over three years
- Include joint programming with creative organisations such as galleries, schools, or libraries
- Collaborate with local businesses and community groups to encourage participation
- Foster a strong connection to local identity and culture
- Enhance walkability and accessibility
Projects may also incorporate:
- Multi-event series throughout the year
- Placemaking initiatives that contribute to long-term street vibrancy
- Council or sponsor co-funding to enhance project scale
- Partial street closures, provided safety and community access are maintained
How much money can you get?
The Open Streets Program 2025-28 offers up to $350,000 in funding per successful applicant. This funding must be used over a three-year period to deliver recurring events and establish sustainable activation models.
Applicants should carefully consider their funding request, ensuring they present a well-scoped project that justifies the investment. Bulletpoint can help councils develop a competitive budget, balancing ambition with feasibility to maximise funding success.
