What is the Research Data Infrastructure Grant?
The Research Data Infrastructure Grant Opportunity is an initiative to support projects using existing data infrastructure types to create or apply new approaches for an unmet medical need.
Background
The Research Data Infrastructure Grant Opportunity is part of the Medical Research Future Fund and the Research Data Infrastructure Initiative. It looks to fund the creation or extension of national research data infrastructure. This will support infrastructure that makes evidence-based care easier for, drives efficient use of resources and advances healthcare.
Objective
The objective of this initiative is to support strategic investments that establish and extend national research data infrastructure to support world-class health and medical research.

Funding
A total of $100 million over 10 years from 2022-23 has been made available for the Initiative.
The grant amount will be up to 100 per cent of eligible project costs (grant percentage).
- There is no minimum grant amount
- The maximum grant amount available for a single grant is $2.5 million.
Eligible Projects
Projects should incorporate:
- new linkage and/or use of data from at least 2 existing research data infrastructure sources of different types (e.g. administrative and biobank data, registry and biobank data, wearables and use artificial intelligence); and/or
- novel methodologies and approaches that leverage and enhance existing linked research data infrastructure of at least 2 different types
- a clear outline of how the proposed project will produce knowledge and outcomes that address an area of unmet medical need.
Eligible Applicants
To be eligible you must:
- have an Australian business number (ABN)
- be incorporated in Australia.
You must be one of the following entities:
- a medical research institute
- a university
- a corporate Commonwealth entity
- a corporation (including businesses and not for profits).
This grant opportunity encourage joint applications provided you have a lead organisation who is the main driver of the project and is eligible to apply.
The program can only accept applications where you can provide:
- details of your nominated Chief Investigator A (CIA), the person who will take the lead role in conducting the project
- details of all members of your research team are listed as Chief Investigators (CIs)
- evidence from your board (or chief executive officer or equivalent if there is no board) that the project is supported, and that you can complete the project and meet the costs of the project not covered by grant funding
- letters of support from each project partner, where applicable.
